Mathematics Subject Lead – Mrs. A. O'Brien

At St Augustine’s, we believe that every child can succeed in and enjoy mathematics. We follow a mastery approach, which means that children develop a deep and secure understanding of mathematical ideas, making connections between different areas of maths rather than simply memorising rules and procedures. We follow the White Rose Maths scheme of learning, alongside a range of other resources, which we adapt and supplement to meet the needs of our pupils.

Our teaching follows the concrete–pictorial–abstract approach, giving children opportunities to explore mathematical ideas using practical equipment, represent their thinking through pictures and diagrams, and then apply their understanding using numbers and mathematical symbols. We place a strong emphasis on fluency, problem solving and reasoning, encouraging children to explain their thinking, make connections, tackle challenges and find different ways to solve problems.

We want our children to become confident, resilient and flexible mathematicians, who understand that maths is not just something we do in the classroom. We make links to everyday life and real-world situations, helping children to recognise when and how they can use their mathematical knowledge. Through problem solving and reasoning, children develop valuable transferable skills such as logical thinking, decision-making, perseverance and the ability to communicate their ideas — skills that will support them both in their future learning, careers and throughout their everyday lives.

How can you support your child at home?

You can support your child’s mathematical learning through simple activities and conversations at home. You can practise number facts and times tables, spot and discuss numbers, shapes and patterns in everyday life, practise telling the time and use money together when shopping. These everyday opportunities help to build confidence and show your child how useful maths is in the real world. Most importantly, keep it fun and encourage your child to explain their thinking and talk about the maths they notice around them.
