Physical Education

At St. Augustine’s, we believe that Physical Education and School Sport contributes to the overall education of young children by helping them lead full and valuable lives through engaging in purposeful and high-quality physical activity. We aim to promote healthy lifestyles, develop physical skills and development and the knowledge of their own body in action. PE allows children to test their resilience, increase their confidence, test their perseverance and challenge their positive competitiveness.

Teamwork and sportsmanship is central to all PE lessons and School Sport activities, alongside our school values and Catholic beliefs.

Curriculum intent

At St Augustine's of Canterbury Roman Catholic Primary School, we aim to provide a high-quality, inclusive and engaging Physical Education curriculum that inspires all children to develop a lifelong love of physical activity and healthy living.

Our curriculum provides opportunities for children to develop their physical skills, knowledge and understanding across a broad range of sports and activities, including games, gymnastics, dance, athletics, swimming and outdoor adventurous activities. Pupils progressively develop fundamental movement skills, coordination, balance, agility, teamwork, communication and tactical awareness.

Swimming is an important part of our PE curriculum, and we aim for all children to leave primary school able to swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres, use a range of strokes effectively and perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations.

By the end of Key Stage 2, we aim for all children to be physically confident, competent and motivated to participate in sport and physical activity beyond school.

We encourage children to demonstrate resilience, perseverance, leadership and good sportsmanship, while understanding the importance of exercise for their physical and mental wellbeing.

Our PE curriculum reflects our Catholic values and the principles of Catholic Social Teaching, particularly Human Dignity, the Common Good and Solidarity. We promote respect, fairness, inclusion and cooperation, ensuring that every child feels valued, supported and encouraged to achieve their personal best.

Through PE, we strive to develop confident, active and respectful children who recognise the importance of looking after themselves and others, both within school and in the wider community.

Curriculum Implementation

At St Augustine's, Physical Education is taught through a broad, balanced and progressive curriculum, ensuring that all children have opportunities to develop their physical skills, knowledge and confidence. Every class receives two hours of PE each week, with lessons carefully planned to build upon prior learning and develop skills progressively throughout the school.

We recognise the importance of children being physically active for at least 60 minutes every day, in line with national recommendations. We encourage physical activity both within and beyond PE lessons through active playtimes, extracurricular opportunities and active learning throughout the school day.

Lessons are delivered through a combination of teacher modelling, practical demonstrations, individual challenges, paired activities and team games. Key technical vocabulary is an essential part of every PE lesson, ensuring children develop a strong understanding of the skills, techniques and tactics being taught. Children are encouraged to use this vocabulary when discussing, evaluating and improving their own performance.

Practical learning is at the heart of our curriculum, with children participating in a variety of activities, including gymnastics, dance, athletics, invasion games and striking and fielding games. Lessons are adapted to ensure that all pupils, regardless of ability or individual needs, can participate and experience success.

Swimming is an important part of our PE curriculum. Although swimming lessons are delivered to selected year groups, we ensure that all children have the opportunity to attend swimming lessons during their time at our school. Our aim is for children to leave primary school able to swim at least 25 metres confidently, use a range of strokes effectively and demonstrate safe self-rescue skills.

We provide enrichment opportunities through sporting competitions, festivals, inter-school events and extracurricular clubs. These experiences allow children to apply their skills in different environments, develop teamwork and leadership, and represent our school with pride. Where appropriate, educational visits and external sporting opportunities further enhance children's experiences of physical activity.

Assessment is ongoing and formative, with teachers using observations, questioning and practical demonstrations to assess children's knowledge, skills and understanding. This enables teachers to identify areas for development, provide feedback and adapt future lessons to meet pupils' needs. Progress is monitored throughout each unit to ensure children continue to build confidence and develop their physical abilities.

Through our approach, we aim to make PE enjoyable, inclusive and purposeful, encouraging every child to remain active, challenge themselves and develop a positive attitude towards physical activity.

Curriculum impact

At St Augustine's, we aim for all children to leave school with the confidence, knowledge and skills to enjoy physical activity throughout their lives.

Children will demonstrate clear progression in their physical skills, tactical understanding, teamwork and use of key technical vocabulary. They will understand the importance of leading a healthy, active lifestyle and demonstrate resilience, respect and good sportsmanship.

Inclusion is at the heart of our PE curriculum. Lessons are adapted to meet the needs of all learners, including children with SEND, through differentiated activities, appropriate equipment and additional support where required. We aim to ensure every child can participate, experience success and make progress from their individual starting points.

Pupil voice is used to gather children's opinions and experiences of PE, helping us continually improve our provision. Through ongoing teacher assessment, observations and monitoring, we track progress, identify areas for development and ensure all children are supported and challenged to achieve their full potential.
